Pilates might look slow and controlled, but anyone who has spent time on a reformer knows how much work is happening through the feet. You are constantly pushing, stabilising, balancing and adjusting your position, often through very small movements.
That is why what you wear on your feet can make a bigger difference than you might expect.
Regular socks are designed mainly for comfort. Pilates grip socks are designed with movement in mind. The grip, fit, fabric and structure all serve a purpose, helping you feel more secure while still keeping your feet comfortable throughout class.
It starts with the grip
The most noticeable difference between regular socks and Pilates socks is the sole.
Pilates grip socks use silicone grips underneath the foot to create more traction against the reformer, mat or studio floor. This can be especially useful during movements where your feet need to stay planted while the rest of your body is moving.
Think bridges, lunges, standing work or anything that requires you to push through your heels without sliding.
At mad bxnny, the grip is designed to cover the sole from toe to heel. The idea is simple: you should be able to focus on your movement without constantly adjusting your feet.
And yes, we still think the grip should look cute.
The fit matters too
Grip alone is not enough. A Pilates sock also needs to fit properly.
If a sock is too loose, it can shift or twist while you move. If it is too tight, it can become uncomfortable halfway through class. A good Pilates sock should feel secure around the foot while still allowing you to move naturally.
That is why breathable, stretchy materials work so well. Ribbed combed cotton gives the sock structure while still keeping it soft and flexible.
The cuff also plays a role. A slightly higher, structured cuff helps the sock stay in place instead of slowly sliding down your ankle during class.
For us, this is also where the fun part starts. Bows, lace details, ruffles and playful colours can all be added without taking away from the function of the sock.
Pilates essentials do not have to look boring just because they are practical.
Grip socks are also more hygienic
There is another reason many Pilates studios recommend or require grip socks: hygiene.
Reformers, straps and studio floors are shared throughout the day. Wearing socks creates an extra layer between your feet and the equipment while still giving you the traction you would normally get from being barefoot.
For studios, it also helps keep equipment cleaner. For clients, it gives a little extra comfort when using shared spaces.
It is a small detail, but it is one of the reasons grip socks have become such a standard part of Pilates culture.
So, do you actually need Pilates grip socks?
Not every studio requires them, but once you start wearing a good pair, it is easy to understand why people prefer them.
They can help you feel more secure during certain movements, keep your feet covered on shared equipment and make your studio outfit feel a little more complete.
When choosing a pair, look for grip across the full sole, breathable fabric, a secure fit and a cuff that stays in place.
And of course, choose something you actually want to wear.
Because if you are already going to Pilates, there is no reason your socks cannot be part of the outfit too.
At mad bxnny, we like to think of grip socks as a small detail that does a lot: practical enough for the reformer, comfortable enough for class, and cute enough that you actually look forward to putting them on.
Cute grip. Stronger moves. A happier you.
